Something strange is crawling across the floor of the Novo Mundo coffee warehouse... The Six-banded Armadillos are unusual creatures, with their hard shells, pointed snouts, and small claws. Unlike the Three-banded Armadillo, the Six-banded Armadillo does not roll itself into a ball. However, they are always active, looking for food, digging holes, or interacting with other animals. At Hof van Eckberge, the animals have a large outdoor enclosure in a dry riverbed. This is quite unique, as in most zoos these unusual animals can only be seen indoors!
General information about the Six-banded Armadillo
Latin name: Euphractus sexcinctus
Six-banded Armadillos live alone and are mainly active in the evening and at night. They dig into the ground with their strong claws to search for insects and worms. They can be found in South America, in countries such as Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Armadillos live there in open grasslands and forests. When danger threatens, they can quickly burrow into the ground to hide. This makes them true survivors in the wild!
