Last week, Tim - our curator and biologist - applied for EAZA membership at EAZA headquarters in Amsterdam! A great step in the professionalization of our park. But, what exactly is EAZA, and why is it relevant to a - relatively small - park like Hof van Eckberge? In this blog, we'll tell you all about it >>

EAZA: European Association of Zoos and Aquaria

EAZA is the most important association for European zoos. In the Netherlands parks such as Burgers' Zoo, Ouwehands Dierenpark, Artis and Wildlands Emmen, are members of the association. Affiliated zoos exchange animals and share knowledge with each other on a daily basis and work together on hundreds of breeding programs, with the goal of preserving (endangered) species and species that have become extinct in the wild.

Why Hof van Eckberge and EAZA?

After several meetings with EAZA, we decided to prepare an application for membership. That way, we can exchange not only knowledge but also species in the future to contribute to different breeding programs. EAZA zoos are also required to meet strict guidelines, taking our park to an even higher level. Tim states: “We will never become an Artis or a Burgers. We have twenty-five thousand square meters, and we'll have to make do with that for the time being. We are going to focus on well-themed, large exhibits for smaller species.”

Is the park now a direct member?

Before membership is granted, an examination and inspection must take place. There is currently a waiting list for application, so we probably won't get the outcome of possible membership for another year. Until then, Hof van Eckberge continues to professionalize and build, matching the guidelines set forth by EAZA.

Our future plans

The development of our park never stands still! We are also launching a new project in the near future. At the moment we are not making any statements about its content, but if you want to stay informed we recommend subscribing to our newsletter and socials.

See you soon!
